What It Means To Be A Christian?
The word Christian means “a follower of Christ.” Being a Christian is more than just being a good person and going to church every Sunday. It does mean believing that Jesus is the Son of God and that he died on the cross for our sins, but it is so much more.
It means following Jesus Christ, having a personal relationship with Him, receiving Jesus as your savior, and spreading the Gospel with others. God wants us to live our lives in his word through the Bible. It is a new way of life and a lifelong process of following the example of Jesus Christ.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” —John 3:16
The word “Christian” appears only three times in the New Testament:
“When he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christian first at Antioch.” —Acts 11:26
Then Agrippa said to Paul, “Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?” —Acts 26:28
“However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.” —1 Peter 4:16
Becoming a Christian also involves repenting our sins and surrendering our will to God. When we repent our sins and are saved, we are changed on the inside and our heart has been changed by the presence of God. As followers of Christ, we find great peace in the promises of God. When we are going through tough times, we know God will always help us through them.
To recap, a Christian is someone who is saved, walks in faith, shares the Gospel with others, and displays a changed life. The best gift you could ever receive is to be a Christian.
